    § 02Guide

    How to use UTM parameters.

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a link. They do not change the page that opens, but they tell Google Analytics (and any other analytics tool) where the visitor came from: which source, which channel and which campaign.

    ParameterWhat it showsExample
utm_sourcethe source: the website, network or mailing listgoogle, facebook, newsletter
utm_mediumthe channel or type of trafficcpc, paid_social, email, print
    utm_campaignthe campaign nameautumn-launch-2026
    utm_termthe paid keyword (optional)business-website
    utm_contentthe ad or link variant (optional)top-banner, video-15s

    Rules that keep reports clean

    • Write everything in lower case: “Facebook” and “facebook” appear in reports as two different sources.
    • Use hyphens instead of spaces and avoid accented letters in values.
    • Agree on a fixed list of sources and channels and use it for every campaign.
    • Do not add UTM parameters to internal links on your own website: they would replace the real source of the visit.
    • For Google Ads, auto-tagging (gclid) is sufficient in most cases; UTM parameters are useful for other analytics tools.

For posters, flyers and business cards, use the “print” channel and a QR code: your reports will show how many people scanned each piece.

    § 03Frequently asked questions

    Frequently asked questions.

    01

Do UTM parameters affect rankings in Google?

No. UTM parameters are read only by analytics tools. To prevent the parameterised versions from being indexed, a website’s pages need a canonical address, as all websites we build have.

    02

Where do I see the results?

In Google Analytics 4, under Reports › Acquisition › Traffic acquisition, with the “Session source / medium” and “Session campaign” dimensions.

    03

Are the links I generate stored?

Only in your browser, as a history, so that you can reuse them. They do not reach us and can be deleted at any time with the “Clear history” button.

    04

Which error correction level should I choose for the QR code?

Level M suits screens and ordinary print. For materials exposed to wear or printed very small, choose Q or H: the code becomes denser but remains readable even if part of it is damaged.
